Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
