Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Fan Response
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to avoid both.
“It's like being force fed hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that Gilligan and his team are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
