The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often marked by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
