The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
