Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a book next month titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts his experience endured behind bars.

The revelation emerged just 11 days following the former president left prison while his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict for illegal collaboration connected to efforts to secure presidential race money linked to the regime of former Libyan leader.

Prison Experience: Solitary Musings

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he writes in an extract, implying the book will focus on his reflections during isolation rather than wider commentary of the overcrowded and struggling correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, not present in that facility, where noise is constant sound,” he continues. “The noise is alas constant. However, akin to empty spaces, one’s inner world is fortified in prison.”

Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal

At his release request hearing, he had appeared by video link from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this ordeal tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined that at 70 years of age, I’d be in prison. It’s a trial I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

Sarkozy, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural past president from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure of France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to go through the three books he had in his cell: a biography of Jesus in two parts and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, where an innocent man ends up incarcerated then breaks out to seek vengeance.

Life in Confinement

Sarkozy was placed secluded due to safety concerns in a space approximately nine square meters featuring a personal bathroom at La Santé prison in Paris. Two bodyguards occupied a neighbouring cell.

It was stated his diet consisted only yoghurts during his stay worried that meals provided might have been spat on. Options were available to prepare his own meals yet he declined, according to reports. Unclear remains if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who saw him regularly each day throughout the jail term, told the release hearing he would be safer outside jail compared to inside. “There were threats against his life, listened to yells at night and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison last month when a French court sentenced him to a half-decade term on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to obtain election financing for his 2007 presidential race.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, and a fresh trial is scheduled for the coming spring.
