New York's next mayor affirms he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for most New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central policy, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his victory in November.
"The choice rested on the security of my family and the need to dedicating my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda voters supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live in Astoria, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.
Campaign Controversy
In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
Yet his critics, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria apartment.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
