Meteorologists have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with snowfall likely across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Festive Events Go Ahead Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of advisories for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the weather service.

Fireworks Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be low, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for Friday

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are expected on public transport.

The Mercury Expected to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Advisories Released

Meanwhile, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this signified the weather could to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
