McLaren's Lando Norris Secures Debut F1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi In Spite Of Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.

With a performance full of nerveless racing, the McLaren driver has sealed his first Formula One world championship by securing P3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Third place was sufficient for the 26-year-old driver, even though Red Bull's Max Verstappen took the victory and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri came home in second.

Norris executed exactly what was necessary in an incredibly intense race at the Abu Dhabi track, including a series of audacious overtakes, with impeccable execution from both the driver and his McLaren squad.

An Important Achievement for British Motorsport and The Team

In taking his maiden world championship, Norris is now the 11th British driver to do so. It concludes McLaren's title drought, which dated back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the championship double back in 1998.

The Story of the McLaren

Regarding the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for much of the season, there was obvious frustration at stumbling in the closing stages. A series of poor performances and some errors, including crashing out in Baku, were expensive. However, he emerges having demonstrated he is too of champion caliber. To have been so fast in only his third season in F1, with multiple victories, remains a huge achievement.

Verstappen too had been exceptional to take the title battle to the wire. The Dutchman did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but after fighting back from a 104-point deficit mid-season, he did not quite have enough to overhaul Norris, finishing just a handful of points behind.

Closing it Out with Ruthless Precision

Norris closed out his success with clinical focus to take the championship that had been so close but eluded him as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two rounds. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable strategy call in Qatar.

This represents a significant accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh year in F1, all of them with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during some difficult periods, convinced they would return to the top. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a hugely impressive job to stick at his task, maintaining his cool and confidence even when under the cosh. After losing the championship lead to Piastri earlier, he nonetheless worked at maximising the car's potential.

The Title-Deciding Race

In the race, Verstappen held his lead through the first corner, but the three title leaders kept it clean. Piastri, using the hard tyre, was aggressive and made a brilliant move to pass the outside of Norris to take second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were free to race, but put Norris under threat from Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris come out into traffic, but he passed rivals within a lap and displayed no signs of nerves in his driving.

During the race, he made an incredibly bold move to dive past two cars in one swoop, climbing to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. The rival team instructed their driver to hold up Norris, which resulted in a dramatic assault where Norris burst up the inside line, nearly completely off the track.

The incident was investigated by the stewards, with several impossibly tense laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris settled the matter. This decisive charge without being held up was crucial to his title fight.

Diverging Fates

While Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was stark. As the young guns battled over the title, Hamilton, the grand champion, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Italian team had been met by enthusiasm but produced what was comfortably his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will look to rebuild over the winter.
