Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities released security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
