Israelis observe second remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The incident saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"The aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but events still were held across the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the talks said that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The official said the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are working hard to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Key Matters in Talks
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid distribution
- Future governance of the area
Citizen Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until each abducted person come back none of us will have peace of mind."
"After we see everyone home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty continue in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do any agreement required for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need promises that we will be secure."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in return for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the music event, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"As the evening arrives, the fear appears with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my little child who rests his head on me all night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had received the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli strike in the south part area.
Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated additional fatalities had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking help to the south, medics reported.
