Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
New York City Mayor Mayor Adams revealed his intention to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, despite months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a âsnake and a liarâ and alleging of having âa history of marginalizing Black political contenders.â Yet, in a new development, Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now plans to campaign alongside Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.
âIt's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this race is,â Adams stated.
Adams continued, âThey have watched their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and Iâm going to go to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and Iâm going to walk with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.â
Race Dynamics and Recent Events
The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has made headlines internationally and represented aspirations for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.
During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would refuse the mayor's support if extended.
Months ago, Adams had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.
At an separate media briefing on the same day, Adams responded to journalists inquiring into the support announcement by saying, âI'm meeting Andrew this evening.â
This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicksâ season opener at the famous arena, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
